Lao PDR, also known as Laos, is centrally located in Southeast Asia, sharing borders with fast-growing, export-driven economies such as China, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Cambodia. Covering a total land area of 236,800 square kilometers, Laos had a population of approximately 7.6 million as of 2023 (World Bank). As a key player in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), the country benefits from vital connectivity through the East-West Economic Corridor and North-South Economic Corridor, making it an attractive destination for businesses and investment.
The country’s transportation infrastructure is rapidly expanding. The Lao-China Railway, inaugurated in December 2021, connects Kunming City in Yunnan Province, China, to Vientiane, Laos, significantly boosting regional trade and logistics. Future plans include integrating this railway with Thailand’s rail network, currently under construction, further extending connectivity southward to Singapore.
Lao PDR is emerging as a competitive and dynamic economy in Southeast Asia, offering diverse opportunities for both domestic and foreign investors. Key factors driving its growth include:
Strong governance and transparency, fostering investor confidence
Business-friendly policies and a supportive investment ecosystem
Large-scale infrastructure projects, enhancing regional connectivity
Sustainable management of natural resources, balancing development with environmental responsibility
Additionally, Laos has been ranked among the world’s friendliest countries. In a survey by London-based travel publisher Rough Guides, Laos ranked third in the world for friendliness, earning a reputation for its warm hospitality and welcoming culture. Often referred to as a land of “wholehearted people,” the country is home to a rich diversity of cultures, lifestyles, and artistic traditions.
Laos consists of 17 provinces, stretching 1,162 kilometers from north to south, with its 7.6 million inhabitants representing 49 officially recognized ethnic groups within four main language families. However, estimates suggest that more than 100 ethnic groups exist in the country.
Amata Corporation Public Company Limited, led by Chairman Mr. Vikrom Kromadit, has launched the Amata Smart & Eco City Namor in northwestern Oudomxay Province, Laos. This project, developed under Amata City Lao Company Limited, follows a 2022 concession agreement with the Lao government.
Spanning 31.5 sq. km (19,000 rai), with an initial phase covering 9.6 sq. km, the city is designed as a high-tech industrial estate, integrating smart and eco-friendly solutions to drive sustainable economic growth. Backed by Thai and international partners, the development serves as a model for innovation-driven urban and industrial expansion.
Amata Smart & Eco City Namor enjoys prime access to regional transport networks, with its strategic location next to Namor Railway Station, a key stop on the Lao-China Railway. The project is also adjacent to planned expressways that will enhance connectivity between Laos, China, Thailand, and Vietnam. Recognized as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ), the city offers attractive incentives for investors, making it one of the most compelling industrial locations in the region.
Amata’s long-term vision includes expanding up to 200 sq. km in Laos, reinforcing the country’s position as a strategic investment hub in ASEAN.
Supportive investment environment from the Lao government and high tax incentives
Lowest utility rates in the region, power generated from renewable clean energy sources to support low-carbon manufacturing
Young, friendly and trainable workforce (Laos has a total population of 7.2 million people with median age of 24 years), Low-cost of wage and Flexible import workface from ASEAN Country and China
