About Luang Namtha Province

Luang Namtha province shares a 140-kilometre land border with the People’s Republic of China, and its northwest frontier with Myanmar follows a 130-kilometer stretch of the Mekong River and the Laos province of Oudomxay. The province’s capital is Luang Namtha.

The 422-kilometre-long China-Laos Railway connects border town Boten with Chinese city Mohan and Laos’ capital Vientiane; Luang Namtha province’s major railway station is at Natuey, adjacent to the new Amata Smart and Eco City Natuey.

Last year, the Laos government has approved the construction of an expressway running between Bokeo province and Boten at Luang Namtha province, which will link China and Thailand through Laos. In addition, surveys of the next three sections of the Laos-China Expressway, which is being built between Vientiane and Boten have been completed. The expressway will run for a distance of 440 kilometres and will be built in four sections. The first section between capital Vientiane and Vangvieng district was been opened in December 2021.

China-Laos Railway

China-Laos-Thailand Railway

Thailand will accelerate its railway connectivity to be linked to the China-Laos railway project. The 253-km section between Bangkok and Nakhon Ratchasima will be the first phase of the PRC-Thailand high-speed railway project with the target to operate by 2026.
Houay Xai

Houay Xai is a district in Bokeo province, Laos, on the Mekong River opposite Chiang Khong, Thailand. Asian Highway 3, which runs through the province, extends north to Yunnan Province of China and south to Chiang Rai Province of Thailand.
Nong Kai

Nong Khai is a province and border town on the bank of the Mekong River, which also forms the border with Laos. Vientiane is only 25km from the provincial capital of Nong Khai. The Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge connects the countries.
Highway

The first section Vientiane-Vangvieng of the new Laos-China Highway was opened in 2021. The highway will eventually link the Lao capital with the Chinese border town Boten.
Oudomxay

Oudomxay is the neighboring province to Luang Namtha, the province capital is Muang Xai.
